respect-the-M

“The Respect the M campaign originated during the 2013 freshman summer orientation as partial fulfillment of recommendations made by the Extended Sensitivity and Respect Committee,” said Valeria Ross, assistant dean of students for multicultural affairs and volunteer services. “The program was developed to support the university’s efforts to promote a more inclusive and diverse campus climate.”

The 10 guiding principles of Respect the M are: pay attention, acknowledge others, think the best, listen, be inclusive, be patient, speak kindly, don’t speak ill of others, do not harass people and respect others’ opinions. These pillars are being incorporated into all educational and promotional materials.

“Respect the M is a lifestyle to be lived daily,” Ross said. “By utilizing messaging that includes Respect the M’s pillars, university members can demonstrate their dedication to the university’s mission.”
