Violence Prevention Office

The Violence Prevention Office promotes awareness of the realities of dating violence, sexual assault and stalking. The office also provides education and training for students, faculty and staff concerning these topics. The office serves as a confidential advocate to assist victims of these offenses and as a liaison between the University and local resource groups.

UM Safe Sexual Assault Response

The University of Mississippi is committed to a safe campus and community. As part of this commitment, the university strives to provide effective resources and equitable processes to all students involved in sexual misconduct, including sexual assault and stalking.

Sexual violence can happen to anyone regardless of age, race, gender or sexual orientation. The University of Mississippi does not tolerate sexual violence. We provide programs and services to educate all members of our campus community about responsible conduct, the meaning of consent, how to report incidents of sexual misconduct, and how to hold individuals accountable for their behavior. This website provides resources and information for the reporting party (complainant), the accused (respondent), faculty and staff, parents and friends. If you have questions or need to talk with someone at the university, please contact the university’s Title IX coordinator, the violence prevention coordinator or the University Counseling Center. (See contact information.) The university also offers medical services, including Sexual Assault Nurse Examinations (SANE exams), at the Student Health Center during regular business hours.

Most university employees, including faculty and staff, are required to report sexual misconduct to the Title IX coordinator. If you are unsure whether someone can maintain confidentiality, ask before giving details about your situation. If you would like to make a report of sexual misconduct, contact the Title IX coordinator at 662-915-7045 or TitleIX@olemiss.edu. All complaints of sexual misconduct are handled sensitively and with the appropriate level of discretion.

Sexual misconduct, including sexual harassment and sexual violence (rape, sexual assault, relationship violence, dating violence, and stalking), and all other forms of sex discrimination are violations of federal law, university policy and contrary to the values espoused in our Creed.

Title IX Office

“No person in the United States, shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.” Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, and its implementing regulation at 34 C.F.R. Part 106 (Title IX).”

The University of Mississippi does not discriminate on the basis of sex in education programs and activities, and, as a recipient of federal financial assistance for education activities, is required by Title IX to ensure that all of its education programs and activities do not discriminate in such a manner. Sexual harassment, which includes acts of sexual violence, is a form of sex discrimination and is prohibited by Title IX.

The university’s Title IX coordinator is responsible for overseeing the development of sexual misconduct policies, ensuring compliance with Title IX and relevant federal and state regulations, and investigating Title IX complaints alleging student sexual misconduct. Questions regarding Title IX, as well as concerns about and complaints of noncompliance (including complaints of sexual harassment, sexual assault, sexual violence or other sexual misconduct), should be directed to the Title IX coordinator.

The Title IX coordinator at the University of Mississippi is Honey Ussery and can be reached at TitleIX@olemiss.edu, 662-915-7045 or in Martindale 270D.
